Flavor Flav Next Celeb to Receive Comedy Central Roast

Flavor Flav Really?! I mean, really… Flavor Flav is the next worthy recipient of a Comedy Central roast? Have they run out of celebs or is Flav just a great source of comedic material? According to senior vice president of specials and talent for Comedy Central, Elizabeth Porter, “We only roast the ones we love –- and the world is clearly crazy about this guy. This event will be full of surprises as Flavor Flav is going to experience a whole new kind of love in this Roast.” Um, yeah, right. Well, at any rate, I suppose they can expect excellent viewer numbers based on the uber success of his VH1 reality show, Flavor of Love. It’s certain to be an interesting event, although no specifics on who will be poking fun yet, but you can bet there will be a lot to rib Flav about. His rap and reality show experiences, including his relationship with Brigitte Nielson, as well as his massive reproduction capabilities—Flav has seven children. The Comedy Central Roast of Flavor Flav will air August 12 at 10 p.m.

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Cable, Cable/Satellite, Internet,

Comedy Central logo If you’ve ever dreamed of making it big in stand-up comedy, Comedy Central may just have your first step towards that dream. Today, Comedy Central has started a series of online classes to teach interested comedians-in-training about the finer points of the craft. This is a cool little feature, with 10 broadband video classes called “Crash Course in Comedy.” OK, so maybe it’s not the quick route to comedy stardom, but instructor Ted Alexandro of Comedy Central Presents will provide some helpful guidance on developing jokes, writing and overall stage presence. To further show just how it’s done, he’ll show past clips of Dave Attell, Lewis Black and Greg Giraldo. As a fun little extra, students can build a customized avatar and then have their virtual guy/gal read their jokes. Check it out, and maybe someday we’ll be seeing you on a Comedy Central special.

‘Strangers With Candy’ Creator Directs New Fox Comedy

Paul Dinello, Amy SedarisIf you’re a Strangers with Candy fan, no doubt you are a fan of Paul Dinello. He co-wrote, directed and starred in the Comedy Central show. His role as art teacher Geoffry Jellineck, and his scenes with Stephen Colbert in particular, were too funny. The good news is that he’s directing a pilot for FOX.. the bad news is that he won’t be appearing in this comedy. No worries—Me & Lee? sounds like just the quirky little show that’s right up his alley. Strangely enough, it’s about a man who discovers “bionic” back surgery in his search for back pain relief. The “Lee” part comes into play with the Bionic Man, Lee Majors, who runs the bionic back surgery operation. So far, no news on casting, but we’re guessing the part of Lee Majors will be played by… Lee Majors. Oh please, just play that cheesy bionic sound effect—that’ll be a great hook to keep the viewers coming back for more! And cast Amy Sedaris. Pretty please?

Stephen Colbert Ice Cream—Yummy.

Stephen Colbert It’s official. Stephen Colbert will have an ice cream flavor named in his honor. Internet rumors have been swirling about the possibility of a Colbert-themed flavor from Ben & Jerry’s. You know you’ve hit the big time when you become a flavor, and it seems Colbert is as likely an honoree as anyone. The flavor will be called “Stephen Colbert’s Americone Dream,” a vanilla base with fudge-covered waffle cone pieces and caramel. The folks at Ben & Jerry’s describe it as “The sweet taste of liberty in your mouth.” Hmmm, that seems like a peculiar description. Since when do waffle cones and caramel taste like liberty, and why does that personify Colbert? Colbert, ever the quick-wit, responded to the new flavor by saying, “I’m not afraid to say it. Dessert has a well-known liberal agenda. What I hope to do with this ice cream is bring some balance back to the freezer case.” All in good fun though—Colbert will donate proceeds to charity via his Stephen Colbert Americone Dream Fund.

Sarah Silverman Program Gets Renewed

Sarah Silverman I just reported last week about the phenomenal ratings that the new Comedy Central show, The Sarah Silverman Program enjoyed. Unbelievable enough, after just two episodes, the comedy network ordered a second season. Comedy Central announced today that the second season will include fourteen episodes total, seven of which will air in the fall. The two episodes that have aired drew an average of 1.7 million viewers, with a timeslot win for 10:30 - 11:00 p.m for men ages 18-24. With solid numbers, the network couldn’t pass it up. Lauren Corrao, Comedy Central’s executive vice president for original programming and development said of the renewal, “The exceptional critical acclaim combined with the fantastic ratings has created a new Thursday night destination for our viewers. The show is smart, innovative, irreverent and politically incorrect—that, to me, is the purest example of a Comedy Central success.”

Sarah Silverman Has a Hit on Comedy Central

Sarah Silverman Way to go, Sarah Silverman. Her show, The Sarah Silverman Program was a ratings winner for Comedy Central. The show debuted last Thursday, bringing in about 1.8 million viewers and was the most watched primetime cable show for viewers ages 18-49. This marks the biggest debut for an original program on Comedy Central since Drawn Together debuted in 2004. I saw Silverman’s show and really enjoyed it. I’ve read some criticism of her online that says her schtick is getting old, but isn’t that what comedians do? I don’t find everything she says side-splittingly (is that a word?) funny, but I always like to see what crazy thing she’ll say next. In most cases, I can’t even believe the things coming out of her mouth—but that’s the point, I suppose. Her turn as a regular on Crank Yankers was always a highlight of the show. Check out The Sarah Silverman Program on Thursday at 10:30 p.m. It’s definitely worth a look.

O’Reilly and Colbert to Appear on Each Other’s Shows

Stephen Colbert If you’ve never watched The Colbert Report, what are you waiting for? This little gem on Comedy Central never fails to deliver, in great part because of the character that Stephen Colbert plays. He has in many ways patterned himself after Fox News Channel host Bill O’Reilly. Why then, is The O’Reilly Factor show so annoying? Because it’s not meant to be funny, and Colbert’s is hilarious. What happens when these two worlds collide? Find out on January 18th, when O’Reilly will appear on The Colbert Report and Colbert will be a guest on O’Reilly’s show. “I look forward to the evening,” Colbert said. “It is an honor to speak face-to-face with a broadcasting legend, and I feel the same way about Mr. O’Reilly.”

“Chappelle,” “Reno” in Syndication

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Cable, Syndication, Ratings,

Dave Chappelle Ah, syndication—the promise land. Well, at least it gives fans of shows the opportunity to see their favorite episodes again, while picking up brand new viewers who might have missed the show the first time around. The latest shows heading for syndication in the fall are Reno 911! and Chappelle’s Show, both from Comedy Central. “The sitcom arena is always one that works well for stations, but there’s not as much product coming down the pike,” said Jim Packer, president of worldwide television distribution at MGM. MGM Studios has been in talks with stations to air the shows. “South Park has already broken the cable-to-syndication taboo and really proven that a show that works on Comedy Central can make it in syndication quite well.”

Reno 911! will be starting its fifth season on Comedy Central, with a film, Reno 911!: Miami, expected in February. Chappelle’s Show began in 2003, with the second season winning its time slot for men 18-34, and a DVD of season one going on to be the best-selling DVD of a television show. Chappelle left the show during the third season, with the final shows airing as Chappelle’s Show: The Lost Episodes.

Colbert Portrait to Grace Restaurant Wall

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Cable, Cable/Satellite, Internet,

Stephen Colbert A portrait of The Colbert Report‘s Stephen Colbert was recently auctioned on e-Bay for charity. Turns out the highest bidder was Chad Walldorf’s chain of barbecue restaurants—bidding $50,605 for the painting which once hung above the fireplace on the set of Colbert’s show. Kooky lil’ painting, showing Colbert standing in front of a portrait of himself—so when he stands in front of it in reality, it’s Colbert standing in front of Colbert… standing in front of Colbert. Colbert announced Walldorf and his business partners as the winning bidder on Tuesday’s show. The partners, who oversee 17 Sticky Fingers restaurants, plan to put the painting in their Charleston, S.C. restaurant. An homage to Colbert, who calls Charleston his hometown.

“We don’t know much about art, but figured any time you can get two portraits for the price of one, then it must be a great deal,” Walldorf told The Associated Press. Proceeds for the sale will go to Save the Children.
